TransUnion: Leading the way in digital credit reporting
TransUnion created the first online information storage and retrieval data processing system. This is an interesting system that allows customer access to credit information online. Indeed, even consumers who do not work with TransUnion benefit from this development, since other credit bureaus now use online systems to deliver their products and services as well.
One of the advantages of online access to one's credit card includes instant access from anywhere with a computer. It is possible for consumers to more readily access their credit reports and credit scores, and actively fight identity fraud. Being able to directly access their own information puts consumers in better control.
Services and products offered by TransUnion
The most obvious product offered by TransUnion is the credit report. You can also view your credit score online. Not only can you see your score and report from TransUnion, but the popular 3-in-1 Credit Profile offered by TransUnion allows you to access to Experian and Equifax information as well. This way, you can compare the information all the credit bureaus have to each other. TransUnion also offers business credit reporting services as well, so that businesses can monitor their credit.
It is important to note that these products do cost money. However, it is possible to get a free personal credit report (but not the score) from TransUnion in a couple of ways:
- Once a year, you are entitled to a free copy of your credit report from TransUnion.
- If you have been denied credit, based on something in your TransUnion credit file, the company has to send you a free report if you request it in writing within 60 days of the denial.
TransUnion also offers Online Credit Monitoring. This product keeps tabs on your credit report, and sends you updates when something changes. If a negative item appears, or if an account is opened, you are alerted. This can help you stay on top of your credit, and be aware of what is in your report. Online Credit Monitoring is bought with a monthly fee.
Another interesting product offered by TransUnion is the KnowYourLoanRate kit. This is an educational and planning tool that can help you prepare to buy a home. The idea is to help you get your credit score and report in a place where you are eligible for the best loan rate.
TransUnion also sells information to businesses. Credit card companies, banks and insurance companies can receive information about your credit report so that they can decide whether to market to you. However, if you want to be removed from such a list, you can notify TransUnion, and the company will stop selling your information to third parties.
TransUnion offers a variety of educational and information tools that can help you manage your credit. And, with a variety of security tools and measures, not to mention easy online access for consumers, it is no surprise that TransUnion is one of the three major credit bureaus.
