Fix Your Credit Report
But you might have made mistakes regarding your credit report and some of your financial decisions. Even if you have not, you still want to be able to maintain your good credit. There are steps you can take to improve your credit report, or keep it favorable:
- Make all your payments on time, and in full. This is one of the best things you can do to keep a good credit report or improve one that could use a little help. When you make your payments on time, you show that you are responsible, and that you are reliable and can be counted upon to make regular payments. When you pay the full minimum due, this only reinforces the fact that you have good financial habits.
- Keep your balances well below your credit limits. On credit cards, keep your balances much lower than your credit limits. This shows that you are not using all of your available credit, and shows that you are likely to stay away from serious debt problems. If you have a credit report that is less than favorable, you can help boost your report by paying down some of your credit card balances. It is recommended that you carry a balance that is no more than 3/4 of your credit limit. Keeping it to half of your limit (or less) is even better.
- Avoid making too many credit inquiries. Another thing you want to avoid is making a lot of inquiries for new credit. Creditors see this in your credit report, and worry that you are in financial trouble because you keep looking for more credit. This can be negative. If you do not make inquiries, you will see some improvement in your credit report.
- Check your credit report regularly, and correct any errors. In some cases, your credit report may reflect badly on you because of mistakes that may be in your credit report. Check your credit report on a regular basis to make sure that everything in there is correct. If there are mistakes, you need to correct them by contacting the credit bureaus, and by contacting the creditor that made the mistake. This way, you can get the issue corrected and improve how things look in your credit report.
You should be aware that it can sometimes take a while for your credit report to show significant improvement. It can take between 30 and 60 days for something to appear in your credit report, and that includes the positive things that you do to clean up your credit report. Watch out for companies that claim they can help you improve your credit report (and/or credit score) immediately. Usually some kind of superficial change is made in such cases, and it may not be a long lasting change. Instead, you should rely on methods that show solid improvement in your finances, and proves your true fiscal responsibility.
